The next SLA question for candidates was: What distance learning tools (for example, webinars, virtual worlds) should SLA provide for units to have the most impact?
The question mentions webinars and virtual worlds, and my short answer is, well, webinars and virtual worlds. I would add to that Skype, because with Skype you can connect people and sites across the globe, and use the videoconferencing features as well. There are some limitations to that, but I think this is a tool that could be used effectively as well.
I think, as Divisions, we can leverage practices from the Chapter side, such as the Chapter calls and Idea Bank wiki (you'll have to log in as an SLA member), to bring more connection and conversation among Divisions. I think we can bring new value to members by offering more joint events, and events, virtual or otherwise, outside of the Annual Conference. I think Division partnerships are strong and could be further strengthened, and I think some interesting combinations can come out of Division and Chapter partnerships.
I think we’re leveraging some of the tools at our disposal, but I also think we can utilize them more efficiently and creatively. Just look at some of the stuff that was demonstrated during the conference. What if we applied some of that cool stuff to our own operations? What if we used it to be more connected to each other in a more dynamic and adaptable way? What about an SLA iPhone or Android app?
